At a meeting of SADC ministers in charge of gender and the status of women in Kinshasa, new resolutions were adopted in favor of women’s rights. Articles 5, 12 and 13 of the SADC Protocol on Gender and Development have been mainstreamed and institutionalized by the SADC Council of Ministers and Summit of Heads of State and Government to foster a full society for women. Ministers stressed the need for the implementation of gender equality in SADC member countries by demonstrating their continued political will. In addition, the meeting reaffirmed the region’s commitment to promoting gender equality.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has met to discuss a possible military intervention in Niger following the recent coup.
