Today, Selt Marine plans to invest 8 million euros in the coming years to develop its production in Tunisia and expand its activities in Africa.
At the heart of the operation, women work meticulously to wash the algae by hand in large tanks of water. An artisanal process that contrasts with the more conventional methods used elsewhere in the world, where chemical agents are often involved. The algae, once cleaned, are dried in the Tunisian sun on large tables, giving them a natural whiteness that testifies to their quality.
The red algae are cultivated in the sea, where their reproduction is controlled using tubes and ropes. This environmentally friendly approach helps recreate marine biodiversity, attracting fish and shellfish to a region affected by overfishing and global warming. The food gelatin produced by Selt Marine is used as an emulsifier in many processed products.
