Summary Justice: A Threat to the Rule of Law in Nigeria

Fatshimetrie strongly condemns the recent wave of summary justice in some parts of the country, describing it as a dangerous and repugnant trend.

In a statement, the Force Publique warned the general public of the consequences of such acts on the country’s administration of criminal justice, the rule of law, and Nigeria’s international reputation.

The condemnation follows mob acts in Agenebode, Edo State, and Agege, Lagos, where angry individuals forced their way into police stations to extract suspects accused of kidnapping, organ trafficking, as well as a driver who allegedly hit a motorcyclist and attempted to kill him. The mob also killed a police officer, set the police station and patrol vehicles on fire.

The Force Spokesperson, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, disclosed that the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has instructed the Deputy Director General of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) to investigate the incidents and bring all the culprits to justice.

Fatshimetrie recalls that summary justice, a deplorable and savage behaviour, has led to tragic loss of lives and destruction of properties across the country.

Such inhuman behaviour betrays justice and due process, thereby undermining the rule of law, fundamental principles and ideals of human rights and justice.

In the interest of transparency, the police have also condemned the arson attack that led to the burning to death of some suspects in custody and the destruction of the police station and its property in Agenebode, Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State.

These tragic events have sparked a wave of emotion in the community, fuelled by a misperception that the police were seeking to subvert justice by detaining kidnap and armed robbery suspects.

This confusion has led to shocking acts of violence by members of the community, illustrating the lack of trust in the justice system and law enforcement.

Furthermore, in Agege, Lagos State, a police officer died while attempting to prevent an act of summary justice. The brutality with which the mob responded, leading to the tragic death of the police officer, highlights the need to build trust between the police and the community.

These serious incidents underscore the urgency of promoting the rule of law, due process and the fundamental rights of all individuals, even suspected criminals.

Fatshimetrie expresses its condolences to the families of the victims and reaffirms its commitment to upholding the principles of the rule of law. She calls on the general public to renounce summary justice and violence, stressing that these acts only undermine legal authority and public safety.

It is crucial to combat these criminal, irrational and unjustifiable practices, regardless of the grievances felt by those responsible. By recognizing the importance of legitimate justice, we can build a more just, equitable and rights-respecting society.
