Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has reacted sharply to the weekend events in Edo State, describing the situation as a clear example of state capture under the guise of an election.
In a post on his X profile on Monday, the former Anambra State governor stressed that any country whose leadership recruitment process is deeply flawed, as demonstrated in the Edo elections, is doomed to failure.
He said: “What happened this weekend in the name of elections in Edo State does not represent the democratic process we have chosen as the method of electing our political leaders. On the contrary, it was a blatant example of ‘state capture’ and a continued attack on our democratic process and values.
“Any country whose process of recruiting its leaders is so seriously flawed is doomed, and we all suffer the effects in our country.
“I appeal to those in power not to let this situation continue or use it to stay in power. As a country, we have invested significantly in IReV and BVAS, and it is imperative that they are allowed to function and be used properly to free our electoral process from the massive falsification that threatens and aggravates it.
“To the organizations and individuals used to undermine our democracy simply because they hold positions of power, I remind you that your mandate is not eternal. The society you have helped destroy today will sooner or later take revenge on you.
“To the academics and all those complicit in perpetuating this deception, you must seriously consider the roles you play in undermining the very foundations of our democracy. The damage you cause today will inevitably come back to haunt you tomorrow and affect your children in the future.
“These actions have no place in a true democracy. That is why I have always maintained that politics today is not about capturing power, but about saving the country and making it work for all, regardless of their background.
“I remain committed to building a new and genuine democratic Nigeria, which I reiterate is entirely possible.”
This frank and committed speech by Peter Obi underscores the urgency of reforming the electoral process and preserving democratic values in Nigeria. It highlights the persistent challenges facing the country, while calling for deep and lasting change to ensure a more just and equitable future for all.
In conclusion, Peter Obi’s words resonate as a call to action, urging citizens and leaders to work together to build a better and more democratic Nigeria, where every individual’s voice matters and justice and equity prevail.
