The essential role of the CENI in the organization of elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo is highlighted through Didi Manara’s recent exploratory mission to Masamuna. This locality, located in the territory of Masimanimba, was the scene of various irregularities during the elections of December 20, thus pushing the CENI to plan a reorganization of the legislative elections scheduled for next April.
During this awareness session, the local population expressed their concerns about the conduct of past elections. Late deployments, the absence of display of electoral lists, and the presence of imported staff for voting operations were raised. These findings led to a request for early deployment 48 hours before future elections, as well as increased awareness to encourage citizen participation.
Didi Manara stressed the importance of respecting the right to vote despite the obstacles encountered. He also pointed out the vandalism of CENI equipment in Masamuna, urging residents to change their behavior and avoid any act of incivility. Additionally, action will be taken against abnormal practices such as transporting voting machines in private vehicles, including those belonging to candidates.
The CENI mission in Masamuna is part of a process of exchanges with the population with a view to guaranteeing transparent and democratic elections. Faced with the numerous irregularities observed during previous elections, notably electoral fraud and vandalism of CENI equipment, it is essential to strengthen the systems in order to ensure the integrity of the electoral process.
This awareness-raising and dialogue initiative initiated by the CENI in Masamuna illustrates the importance of citizen involvement in the construction of a solid democracy that respects electoral standards. Transparency, accountability and active participation of all stakeholders are key to ensuring free and fair elections across the country.
In a changing political landscape, it is vital that electoral institutions and the population work closely together to consolidate democracy and promote a civic and ethical culture. The challenges are numerous, but it is by working together that the DRC will be able to realize its democratic potential and offer its citizens fair and legitimate elections.
