“Crisis in Eastern DRC: Between dialogue, tensions and hope of peaceful resolution”

The recent statement by the African Union Commission on the crisis in eastern DRC indicates a slight change in tone after months of silence. Moussa Faki Mahamat, President of the Commission, called for dialogue between leaders, particularly those of the DRC and Rwanda. This proposal comes in a context where the region is shaken by heightened tensions.

However, while the African Union advocates dialogue, other international actors adopt more decided positions. Western powers condemn the aggression and call on the DRC to act against the armed groups, specifically naming Rwanda as responsible.

Moussa Faki Mahamat underlined the importance of guaranteeing the integrity of States in the region and the protection of civilian populations, while affirming that no military solution can resolve internal conflicts. He also called for respect for the sovereignty of African countries and non-interference from abroad.

Despite the diplomatic efforts made during the meeting under the aegis of Joao Lourenco, tensions persist on the ground, with the presence of Rwandan forces in the DRC and the human rights violations perpetrated by the M23. The United Nations recently added new individuals to the sanctions list, highlighting the urgency of finding lasting solutions to this crisis.

The situation in eastern DRC remains complex and requires a collaborative and constructive approach from all stakeholders concerned. Dialogue, diplomacy and respect for national sovereignty are essential to achieve a peaceful and lasting resolution to regional conflicts.
