Elections in the DRC: towards strengthened local democracy and encouraged female participation

Today’s article deals with a hot topic in the Democratic Republic of Congo: the elections of provincial deputies and municipal councillors. The President of the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI), Denis Kadima, summoned the electorate for these elections, which represent an important step in the country’s local democracy.

In his speech, President Kadima stressed the importance of this election for the installation of a dynamic local democracy, which plays a crucial role in the development of the country. He encouraged the active participation of young people and women, and appealed to political parties and groups to promote their presence on electoral lists.

A particularly interesting measure put in place by the CENI is the exemption from filing fees for lists that include at least 50% women. This measure aims to promote parity between men and women in politics, while reducing the influence of money in the Congolese political scene.

President Kadima also recalled that the CENI works tirelessly to organize credible, transparent, inclusive and peaceful elections, thus allowing Congolese voters to freely express their political choice. He stressed that the challenge of the CENI is not limited to the deadline of December 20, but is part of a long-term vision of the regular holding of elections as a democratic mode of operation.

Finally, the President of the CENI strongly condemned the rise of unjustified intolerance and called for respect for the battle of ideas in a democratic society. He stressed that violence has no place in the country and that only constructive democratic debate can shape the future of the nation.

This convocation of the electorate for the elections of provincial deputies and municipal councilors marks an important step in the democratic process in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is essential that all political actors and citizens engage in a peaceful and respectful electoral campaign, in order to guarantee free and fair elections, and to consolidate democracy within the country
