The conflict in Kwango province in the DRC continues to escalate. After the attack by Mobondo militiamen on the Batshongo village on May 12, nearly 20,000 displaced people were registered in the province. According to local organizations, these displaced people are mainly women and children, some of whom have been victims of sexual violence.
Faced with this situation, local civil society is asking for the involvement of the Head of State to convene an emergency peace conference and resolve the conflict. It also calls for the establishment of a credible commission to resolve this crisis.
The images of the displaced, shared on social networks, testify to the precariousness of their situation. This humanitarian crisis could worsen if concrete measures are not taken quickly.
At the same time, the Congolese opposition is waking up and trying to organize itself to propose new solutions for the DRC. Political tensions remain high in the country, as highlighted by the recently revealed electoral dispute.
Finally, the reinforcement of the DRC army is part of Félix Tshisekedi’s response to Rwanda’s hegemonic ambitions, while the Minister of Justice is filing a complaint against the M23 movement for war crimes before the ICC. The DRC is therefore still plagued by significant security challenges, which require lasting solutions to guarantee peace and stability in the country.
