The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) must take urgent measures to better regulate the marketing of cobalt, one of the country’s main export products. President Félix Tshisekedi underlined the untapped potential of the DRC in this sector, despite the fact that it has nearly 60% of the world’s cobalt reserves. Shortcomings in the sourcing, pricing and exporting process have led to an unprecedented increase in profits for multinationals, while the country derives little profit from this exploitation. The President called for stricter measures to regulate the export of cobalt and the implementation of the local processing strategy to maximize the benefits for the country. This initiative would also improve working conditions for workers and reduce the negative environmental impacts associated with cobalt mining. The DRC therefore has the opportunity to become a major player in the cobalt industry while contributing to its own socio-economic development.
The Integrated Agricultural Growth Project in the Great Lakes (PICAGL) validated its annual work plan and budget (PTBA) for 2023-2024 during a workshop in Bukavu. The AWPB will make it possible to catch up on certain activities and develop a sustainability strategy for the project. Once approved by the steering committee and the World Bank, the project can begin the implementation of activities. PICAGL plays an essential role in the development of agriculture in South Kivu and contributes to strengthening food security and the local economy.
