The health situation in Kasai is worrying, with an upsurge in measles cases. Since the beginning of 2023, more than 15,525 cases have been recorded, unfortunately resulting in 655 deaths. These alarming figures were announced by the provincial health division of this region of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Dr. Urbain Mekanda, head of the provincial health division, pointed out that the health zone of Luebo is the most affected, with more than 2,000 reported cases and 49 deaths. The health zones of Kanzala in Tshikapa, Kalonda-Ouest, Mushenge, Bulape and Kitangua are also strongly affected by this epidemic.
Measles is a highly contagious viral infection that particularly affects children, manifesting as fever, cough, coryza, conjunctivitis and Koplik’s spots on the oral mucosa. To stem the spread of this disease, the health authorities have put in place measures for the free treatment of patients in local health structures.
In addition, a measles vaccination campaign is planned for September. The Kasai provincial health division is also urging parents to have their children vaccinated to prevent the spread of the disease.
It is essential to strengthen epidemiological surveillance and put in place routine vaccination measures to effectively control measles. The health of the population is a priority and it is crucial to sensitize and inform communities about the importance of vaccination and preventive measures.
This situation in Kasai highlights the importance of continued efforts to fight infectious diseases and promote public health. Collaboration between health authorities, health professionals and the population is essential to put in place effective measures to prevent and control epidemics.
It is therefore essential to support awareness-raising and vaccination actions, while recalling the importance of regular medical monitoring for the protection of everyone’s health, especially children, who are the most vulnerable to these infectious diseases.
In conclusion, the measles situation in Kasaï is alarming, with an increasing number of cases and deaths. It is urgent to put in place prevention and vaccination measures to stem this epidemic and protect the health of the population. Awareness and collaboration of all are essential to guarantee a healthier future for the Kasaï region and the Democratic Republic of the Congo as a whole
