The urgency of road safety in the DR Congo: an alarming assessment of the year 2024

The year 2024 has unfortunately not spared the DR Congo from the sad reality of road accidents. The National Commission for Road Safety (CNPR) of Butembo, in North Kivu, recorded nearly 300 accidents during this year. These alarming figures reveal the fragility of road safety in this region.

The interim head of the CNPR/Butembo, Muhindo Maliro Samuel, delivered these worrying statistics during an interview with Fatshimetrie. According to his statements, these accidents resulted in the loss of human lives with 88 deaths and more than 200 serious injuries. These figures are heartbreaking and underline the urgency of acting to prevent such tragedies in the future.

At the heart of the causes of these accidents, non-compliance with the highway code and drunk driving are singled out. Indeed, many drivers are not sufficiently informed about traffic rules, which creates a breeding ground for road tragedies. In addition, drunk driving remains a widespread practice, contributing significantly to accidents.

It is also important to note that the poor condition of the roads is not the main cause of accidents, contrary to what some might think. Accidents occur even on roads in good condition, such as Boulevard Président de la République. This observation highlights the importance of raising awareness among drivers to adopt responsible behavior, regardless of the quality of the infrastructure.

Faced with this alarming situation, the CNPR Butembo has launched an awareness campaign aimed at promoting road civic-mindedness. The objective is clear: to inform, raise awareness and educate road users for better safety for all. It is crucial that everyone becomes aware of their responsibility on the road and adopts appropriate behavior to avoid unnecessary tragedies.

In conclusion, these alarming figures of road accidents in the DR Congo in 2024 must serve as a warning signal. It is imperative to strengthen awareness, training and compliance with the highway code to prevent new tragedies. Road safety is everyone’s business, and everyone must contribute to making our roads safer for all users.
