Deadly clashes between the FARDC and the Mobondo militia in the Ntshakala Nkowa region

On the night of 6 to 7 December, the Ntshakala Nkowa region was shaken by violent clashes between the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) and the Mobondo militia. These clashes took place as part of Operation Ngemba, led by the 11th Military Region of Greater Bandundu. Thanks to the intervention of the FARDC, around twenty militiamen were neutralized, and several weapons and ammunition were seized.

The spokesperson for Operation Ngemba, Captain Antony Mwalushay, reported that the Mobondo insurgents had ambushed the soldiers on patrol. In a first clash, 17 insurgents were neutralized, and an impressive quantity of weapons was recovered, including 12-gauge rounds, an RBG7 rocket launcher, AK47s and various ammunition.

Unfortunately, a second group of insurgents launched a new attack early the next morning, causing the neutralization of 4 of them. The FARDC seized 9 additional weapons and a stock of cartridges. This violence also caused serious injuries to five members of the armed forces, who were evacuated to receive medical care.

In response to these events, the population of Ntshakala Nkowa and the surrounding area fled en masse, paralyzing all activities in the area. The vice-president of the provincial consultation framework of civil society in Kwango, Symphorien Kwengo, confirmed these clashes and expressed his deep concern about this situation.

These clashes highlight once again the need to strengthen security in the regions affected by armed groups in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The FARDC, despite the challenges they face, have shown their determination to combat these threats and protect the civilian population. It is crucial to continue supporting security and stabilization efforts in these areas to ensure peace and security for all residents.
