Muda wa Amani: Reintegration of young ex-combatants in North Kivu: a glimmer of hope

In the tumultuous region of North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a glimmer of hope has recently emerged with the success of the project for the reintegration of young ex-combatants called “Muda wa Amani”. Initiated by the mayor of Butembo, Senior Commissioner Mowa Baeki Telly Roger, this project has played a crucial role in the social and economic rehabilitation of six hundred young people from armed groups.

During a restitution workshop on labor-intensive work in Butembo, Senior Commissioner Mowa Baeki expressed his satisfaction with the results obtained. This project has provided an invaluable opportunity to these young people by involving them in the rehabilitation of infrastructure and sanitation actions. Beyond their professional reintegration, this initiative has contributed to reducing unemployment and improving the sanitation of the city.

The coordinator of the Disarmament, Demobilization, Community Reintegration and Stabilization Program (PDDRC-S) in North Kivu, Clovis Munihire, welcomed the success of the first phase of the “Muda wa Amani” project. However, he stressed the need for greater mobilization of the community and authorities to ensure the sustainability of this initiative.

Civil society and citizen movements have also committed to supporting this innovative project which aims to supervise 600 young people to strengthen peace and social cohesion in this strategic region. This collective mobilization is essential to ensure real change and foster a dynamic of sustainable reconstruction.

By demonstrating the positive impact of this project, “Muda wa Amani” paves the way for a transition to a more promising future for these young people who are now full of hope. By transforming violence into an opportunity for development, this initiative embodies an inspiring example of resilience and the desire to build a better future together.
