The ‘Revival’ Project: The digital revolution to rediscover ancient Egyptian heritage

In an effort to enhance the value of Egypt’s millennia-old heritage, the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities recently launched the “Revival” project in partnership with global technology company Meta. This innovative initiative was featured on Instagram and is being rolled out across the Egyptian Museum of Tahrir and the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization.

Egypt is currently celebrating the 122nd anniversary of the founding of the Egyptian Museum of Tahrir, adding a significant historical dimension to this groundbreaking project.

The core objective of the “Revival” project is to showcase damaged statues by offering visitors the opportunity to view them in their entirety through augmented reality. Each statue is equipped with a barcode that allows for a unique visual experience, revealing the original appearance of several artifacts on display at the Egyptian Museum of Tahrir.

The artifacts selected for this project have been carefully chosen to reflect the different historical periods of ancient Egyptian civilization. Thanks to specific smartphone applications, visitors can admire these cultural treasures as they were conceived by the ancient Egyptians thousands of years ago.

Five iconic statues from the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir were subjected to the techniques of this innovative project, including the statue of Amun and his wife Mut, that of Senusret I, King Khasekhemwy, the head of the statue of Queen Hatshepsut, the statue of Tutankhamun and that of Seti I.

This initiative aims to increase digital interaction with Egyptian heritage and give a second life to historical artifacts through 3D imaging technology. It represents a step forward in the preservation and promotion of Egypt’s cultural heritage.

The official launch of the “Revival” project was marked by the notable presence of Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Sherif Fathy, Governor of Cairo Ibrahim Saber, Minister of Communication and Information Technology Amr Talaat, Regional Director of Meta in the Middle East Fares Akkad, Deputy Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Yomna Al-Bahar, and Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities Mohamed Ismail Khaled.

This initiative promises to revolutionize our relationship with history by offering a unique, immersive and educational experience to visitors, while contributing to the preservation and enhancement of Egypt’s rich heritage for future generations.
