In a recent tense diplomatic incident between France and Israel, two members of the French consulate were briefly detained by Israeli police while visiting a French-owned holy site in Jerusalem. The situation escalated when Israeli police officers forcibly entered the site of the French-owned Eleona Church without authorization and arrested the two members of the consulate despite their diplomatic status. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot was scheduled to visit the site that day, but was forced to cancel his visit.
After the French minister intervened, the employees were released. The incident angered France, which called the violation of the integrity of a site under its responsibility “a risk of weakening the ties we have sought to maintain with Israel at a time when we must all move forward in the region on the path to peace,” Barrot said.
Tensions between France and Israel have escalated in recent times over calls by French President Emmanuel Macron to end arms exports to Israel for use in Gaza. In 2020, President Macron himself had an altercation with Israeli security officers during a visit to the Church of Saint Anne, another French-owned site.
