Raising awareness among Kinshasa motorcyclists to respect the highway code

Fatshimetrie, November 1, 2024 – The issue of compliance with the highway code by motorcyclists in Kinshasa is at the heart of the debate today. Indeed, during the fifth day of the one-way traffic alternation operation during rush hour, an urgent appeal was made to these road users to comply with the established rules.

Thythy Bikini, an agent of the National Road Safety Commission (CNPR), highlighted the difficulties encountered with motorcyclists, often called “Wewa”. According to her, the latter seem to be insensitive to the importance of the traffic alternation operation, refusing to respect the one-way traffic at certain times of the day. It is therefore imperative for them to become aware of their responsibility and to strictly comply with the highway code.

In this context, the traffic alternation operation implemented in Kinshasa mainly aims to reduce the traffic jams that paralyze traffic in the Congolese capital. The objective is to smooth traffic flow and improve travel management by reducing waiting times and the risk of accidents. Local authorities have therefore taken specific measures to regulate traffic on certain major arteries, such as Baramoto in Béatrice Hôtel.

Although some motorists and public transport drivers have already assimilated the benefits of these temporary restrictions, it seems that motorcyclists are struggling to fully adhere to this approach. It is therefore essential to raise awareness and educate these road users on the importance of respecting traffic rules, not only for their own safety, but also for the well-being of the entire population.

Ultimately, compliance with the highway code is a major issue for safety and traffic flow in Kinshasa. The authorities will continue to closely monitor the application of these measures, while calling for collaboration and accountability from all road stakeholders, including motorcyclists. It is time for everyone to become aware of the positive impact that compliance with the rules can have on the quality of life and safety of all.
