The recent awareness-raising event on children’s rights organized by UN agencies in a school in Kinshasa highlighted the crucial importance of protecting and promoting the fundamental rights of the youngest. This initiative, which was part of the celebration of United Nations Day, allowed adolescents from the André Kimbuta school complex to better understand the work and actions carried out by the United Nations in favor of children’s rights.
The intervention of Joseph Mankamba, communications officer at the office of the resident coordinator of the UN system in the DRC, underlined the commitment of the United Nations to inform and raise awareness among the Congolese community on children’s rights. By presenting the different agencies that make up the UN system and highlighting their areas of intervention to guarantee peace, sustainable development and human dignity, the representatives succeeded in enlightening the students on the importance of these actions and values.
The theme chosen for this year, “Let’s act together for peace, sustainable development and human dignity”, reflects the collective commitment needed to protect children’s rights and ensure their well-being. Students’ participation in interactive activities, such as a competition on the activities of UN agencies, helped to strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the initiatives put in place to support and protect them.
Students’ testimonies, such as that of Élodie Vanga Matondo, highlight the positive impact of these awareness-raising actions. By understanding that they can count on the support of agencies such as UNICEF when needed, children feel reassured and encouraged to make their voices heard and defend their rights.
Furthermore, the fight against disinformation and hate speech was highlighted as a major challenge to protect Congolese youth. By encouraging students to be vigilant about false information, to verify their sources and to promote a discourse based on truth and peace, the speakers conveyed essential values to build a more just and equitable society.
In conclusion, this morning of awareness raising on children’s rights organized by the UN agencies in Kinshasa was a real springboard to strengthen the protection and promotion of the rights of the youngest. By encouraging solidarity, peace and mutual respect, these actions contribute to building a better future for all, in line with the universal values defended by the United Nations.
