Fatshimetrie, October 26, 2024 – The population of the Mbanza-Ngungu territory, located in Kongo Central in the Democratic Republic of Congo, was recently encouraged by the prosecutor at the region’s high court to actively collaborate with the justice system on issues of concern. During a meeting between the prosecutor and representatives of the local community, the magistrate stressed the importance of mutual cooperation to resolve the various ongoing problems.
During this meeting, which marked the first ten months of the prosecutor’s mandate at the head of the high court, various topics were discussed. Among the main concerns were land conflicts, excessive fines, arbitrary arrests and insecurity. Local representatives expressed their concerns about land conflicts related to the sale of land that belongs to heirs, highlighting the consequences of these practices on future generations.
The prosecutor urged the population to favor the path of reconciliation to resolve land disputes, emphasizing the importance of finding fair solutions for all parties involved. He also addressed the issue of fines and bail fees, recalling that these are defined by the competent authorities and encouraging citizens to keep all proof of payment.
Participants also discussed cases of arbitrary arrests and non-compliance with detention periods, sometimes exceeding the legal 48 hours. They welcomed the prosecutor’s initiative to meet with the community to discuss these problems and expressed their willingness to see these discussions continue regularly to find concrete solutions to the challenges facing Mbanza-Ngungu.
