Spreading false rumors: The issues and challenges deciphered during an exchange in Gombe, Kinshasa

The offense of spreading false rumors and the challenges it raises were recently at the heart of discussions during an exchange organized in the prestigious commune of Gombe in Kinshasa. This event, which attracted the attention of journalists and legal experts, was an opportunity to analyze in depth the implications of this complex issue.

Me Charles Mushizi, respected author of the book “Press offenses”, highlighted the importance of distinguishing the false nature of information before judging anyone for spreading false news. He emphasized the unfair nature of the repression of these offenses without having clearly established the veracity of the facts incriminated. Indeed, the question of verifying sources and the reliability of information should be at the heart of concerns before pointing the finger at journalists.

Me Trésor Likonza also shed light on the subject by emphasizing that the offense of false rumors does not exclusively concern journalists. Indeed, it can be considered as an attack on state security, jeopardizing the internal stability of the nation. This broader dimension underlines the importance of combating the dissemination of false information that could undermine citizens’ trust in institutions and sow unrest in society.

Patient Ligodi, organizer of this intellectual event, highlighted the close link between the false and the falsified, highlighting the need to legally clarify these concepts for better application of the law. The first edition of the Book Club, focused on the theme “Propagation of false rumors and what protection for the journalist!”, made it possible to deepen these reflections and raise public awareness of the current issues related to the dissemination of misleading information.
