IFC’s crucial support for the Democratic Republic of Congo’s energy future

FATSHIMETRIE, October 10, 2024 – The energy future of the Democratic Republic of Congo is a key focus of the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a key component of the World Bank Group. During a meeting at the Ministry of Water Resources, IFC Regional Director Mary Porter Pescheka affirmed her institution’s commitment to supporting the country’s energy projects.

Ms. Pescheka stressed that IFC is ready to support Congolese energy policy by promoting project financing, particularly through its “Scaling Made In” program. This program aims to attract investment in mini-energy grids, thus offering a solution to bring electricity to landlocked areas of the country.

The IFC Director highlighted the DRC’s considerable potential in hydropower and mini-solar, stressing the importance of these renewable energy sources for the country’s development. She also expressed the urgency of addressing the challenges of the Congolese energy sector in order to stimulate growth and development.

In a context where only a quarter of the DRC population has access to electricity, the Minister of Water Resources and Electricity, Teddy Lwamba, pledged to support IFC’s efforts. He shared his vision for the country’s energy sector and stressed the importance of attracting more investment to meet the growing electricity needs.

IFC, recognized for its work in emerging countries by promoting private sector development, is positioning itself as a key partner for the DRC in its quest for energy autonomy. By leveraging its expertise, influence and resources, IFC contributes to the creation of markets and opportunities for the sustainable development of the country.

This meeting between IFC and the Ministry of Water Resources and Electricity marks an important step in cooperation to strengthen the Congolese energy sector. It reflects the common desire to promote access to stable and affordable energy for all citizens of the DRC, thus contributing to economic growth and the well-being of the population.
