Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium revival: a dynamic economic engine

At the heart of the iconic Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, a wind of renewal is blowing under the dynamic leadership of MBDA CEO Anele Qaba. As the first quarter of the financial year draws to a close, the fruits of a proactive and concerted approach are materialising, reviving the city’s iconic stadium, a source of pride for residents. The ever-improving events calendar and ongoing development initiatives at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium are providing the city with the boost it needs.

It is true that the success of multi-purpose facilities such as Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium is not only measured by the revenue generated, but also by the stimulating effect they have on the economy. The events economy is primarily a downstream value creator, whose impact is reflected in economic activity and revenue generation.

When 40 000 spectators fill the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, a quarter of them having travelled from different parts of the country, these fans have to sleep somewhere. They go out to enjoy entertainment, shop, visit places of interest and, most importantly, help sustain jobs in the tourism and hospitality sector. This economic impact model guides several initiatives that we are now fully implementing.

The stadium’s event calendar has been rich so far, with a multitude of non-bowl events and top-level football competitions. Working in partnership with the South African Football Association, the financial season got off to a solid start with the hosting of seven official COSAFA CUP matches, including the final won by the Angola national team.

The rejuvenation of Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium has also seen the launch of their long-term tenant Chippa United’s Betway Premiership campaign and the announcement that they will host Bafana Bafana’s next crucial qualifier against Congo Brazzaville in October 2024. This competition promises to bring direct financial benefits to the stadium, as well as positive effects on the local economy, particularly in the tourism and hospitality sectors.

In search of an event calendar that will boost the economy, we have also taken the initiative to host our own events. This is how we are launching the inaugural Nelson Mandela Bay Home of Legends Cup tournament, an annual showcase of African art and culture, showcasing the best of football. Set to take place in November 2024, the tournament will be a celebration of the best of South African football, bringing together the biggest teams in the Premier Soccer League.

At the same time, rugby is not to be outdone, with the organization of the highly anticipated international Investec Champions Cup tournament pitting the DHL Stormers against RC Toulon in December 2024.. The call of international rugby is felt and we are determined to expand our rugby portfolio, with the prospect of regular Springbok fixtures at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium is not only a must-see entertainment venue, but also a vital economic driver for the city. Through its rich events calendar and development initiatives, it embodies the cultural and sporting revival of the region, offering unique and inspiring experiences to locals and visitors.
