The issue of regionalization is a hot topic in Nigeria and there is growing urgency for the Federal Government to embrace this approach as the key to unlocking the country’s full potential. The Oodua Progressive Union (OPU) recently reminded the government of this imperative at its European Summit, highlighting the tangible benefits of a regionalized approach.
The communiqué issued by the Aareonakakanfo of Yorubaland, also the global convener of the diaspora organization, Iba Gani Adams, highlights the critical importance of regionalization. It stresses that the governors of the South West should endorse the integrated development plan for the region to reinvigorate past successes and foster future growth. Special attention is also given to the need to reform the education sector and enhance security of property and life in the region.
Highlighting insecurity as one of the major challenges, the OPU calls on the governors to accord the issue top priority. The creation of a regional security force, similar to Amotekun in Lagos State, is recommended to further enhance security in the entire South-West of Nigeria. It is crucial that governors join forces and put in place effective measures to ensure the protection of all citizens.
Finally, this regionalization recommendation is not only about security but also about the socio-economic development of the region. By investing in education, health, agriculture and other key sectors, South-West Nigeria could not only prosper but also serve as an example for other regions in the country.
In conclusion, implementing a regionalized approach seems to be the key to solving the current challenges and unlocking Nigeria’s untapped potential. South-West governors must seize this opportunity to work together to build a safer, more prosperous and more resilient region for all its people.
