Fatshimetrie has clarified the recent earthquakes felt in Mpape, a suburb of Bwari District Council in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. Despite the growing concern among residents, the Agency has reassured everyone that the tremors were of low intensity and did not pose a threat to the environment.
The Director-General of the Agency, Prof. Olusegun Ige, said in a statement that NGSA was closely monitoring the situation and the tremors were being monitored in real time. They found that the tremors were of low intensity and were generally not dangerous.
In the last five days, starting from September 13, 2024, several significant ground movements were captured by the NGSA-5 monitoring station in Katampe. These movements varied in intensity, with some being weak and others a little stronger.
NGSA experts analysed the data and concluded that the tremors were the result of a build-up of stresses along identified faults that subsequently released seismic energy. Although the epicentres are mainly located to the north-east of the NGSA-5 seismic station around the Mpape axis, some epicentres are also located to the south-west of the station.
Residents in areas affected by the tremors, such as Mpape, Katampe and Maitama, have been advised not to panic as the tremors are rated as weak to moderate on the Modified Mercalli Scale. The Agency is constantly monitoring the situation and will issue updates as necessary.
It is also reassuring to know that NGSA seismic stations are being monitored in real time to ensure that all important information is communicated to the population in a timely manner.
In conclusion, it is essential that residents stay informed and follow the advice provided by the relevant authorities. Although earthquakes can be scary, it is important to remember that safety is the top priority.
