The Kidnapping of Dr Ganiyat Popoola: United Response for Her Release

The kidnapping case of Dr Ganiyat Popoola, a medical doctor abducted in Kaduna in December 2023, continues to cause concern within the medical community and beyond. The Minister of State for Health, Dr Tunji Alausa, recently appealed for the cooperation of all to ensure the safety of the kidnapped colleague.

During a visit to the National Eye Centre, Dr Alausa stressed that negotiations were ongoing to secure the release of Dr Popoola. He reassured the public that the Federal Government and security agencies were fully mobilized for her release.

The Minister stressed that discussions were ongoing with the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, as well as the police and other authorities to ensure the safety of Dr Popoola. Despite the constant changes in demands from the kidnappers, he insisted that all efforts were being made to recover her safe and sound.

The situation led to a seven-day strike by the doctors’ association, in a bid to press for the release of the abducted colleague. However, the Minister called for an end to the strike, stressing that unity and cooperation were essential to ensure a positive outcome to the delicate situation.

As the days pass, uncertainty persists over the fate of Dr Ganiyat Popoola. However, the call for unity and prayer by Minister Alausa demonstrates the determination and commitment of the authorities to ensure his safe release.

This case once again highlights the challenges faced by healthcare professionals in Nigeria, who are not only confronted with the risks associated with their profession, but also with the growing insecurity that threatens their personal safety. As the nation continues to grapple with these challenges, it is essential that solidarity and cooperation be at the heart of the response to such difficult situations.
