For about ten days, the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Félix Antoine Tshisekedi, has been in Belgium for medical follow-up. This period of absence has given rise to much speculation regarding a possible amendment to the Constitution in order to extend his presidential term. However, during a recent interview with Top Congo FM, the Congolese head of state clarified his position on this sensitive issue.
“Salvation is the supreme law,” said Tshisekedi, reaffirming his commitment to respecting the current Constitution. He categorically rejected rumors about a possible extension of his term, stressing that the provisions relating to the duration of the presidential term are irremovable and would require a consultation of the people for any change.
However, President Tshisekedi expressed his desire to reform certain constitutional provisions to improve the functioning of institutions. He notably mentioned the need to simplify the processes for forming the government and electing parliamentary offices. In addition, he suggested that governors should be appointed by the government to limit tensions and tribalism during local elections.
To ensure an inclusive and national approach to reforms, Tshisekedi advocated the creation of a multi-sectoral commission composed of national representatives. This initiative aims to foster dialogue and consultation to achieve consensual and beneficial changes for the entire Congolese population.
Despite his absence during the GENOCOST commemoration in Kisangani, the president’s office stressed that his hospitalization in Belgium was motivated by medical reasons related to a herniated disc. Félix Tshisekedi expressed his intention to return to the country quickly to resume his duties and continue actions in favor of the Congolese people.
His determination to respect the Constitution, his willingness to reform institutions for greater efficiency and his call for inclusive dialogue demonstrate a thoughtful and responsible approach to politics in the Democratic Republic of Congo. President Tshisekedi’s next steps will certainly attract the attention and expectations of the Congolese population as well as the international community.
