Spotlight on the Virunga Energies Project: Access to electricity for a revitalized community

The captivating documentary “Virunga Energies: From Darkness to Light” was screened for the first time in Kinshasa, providing an inspiring and hopeful story for the residents of Goma and the surrounding areas of Virunga Park. This film highlights the incredible transformation brought about by the Virunga Énergies project, which made it possible to connect more than 30,000 homes to the electricity network, thus providing access to electricity to more than 140,000 people.

The massive investment of $16 million from the United States through USAID was essential to the realization of this project. Thanks to this initiative, hydroelectric plants have been established, providing affordable energy to small and medium-sized businesses, thus promoting economic growth and job creation. Access to electricity has proven to be a true catalyst for economic activity, allowing schools, hospitals and businesses to operate more efficiently.

The United States Ambassador to the DRC, Lucy Tamlyn, stressed the importance of highlighting these development aid projects, which are often unknown to the general public. This documentary film produced by young Congolese filmmakers highlights the resilience of the inhabitants of Goma and local communities, who have long lived in darkness due to lack of access to electricity.

Indeed, in a country where only one in ten Congolese has access to electricity in an urban area, this project is proving to be a major step forward in favor of the development of the region. By connecting more than 30,000 homes to the electricity grid, Virunga Énergies has transformed the lives of thousands of people, opening the way to new perspectives and new hopes.

The screening of this film also highlighted the hard work of those who contributed to its production, highlighting the importance of collaboration and commitment for the development of the region. This initiative is part of a sustainable development approach, aiming to improve the living conditions of local populations while promoting the region’s natural resources.

In conclusion, the Virunga Energies project is a concrete example of the positive impact that investment in renewable energies can have to stimulate economic and social growth in sub-Saharan Africa. It also illustrates the key role that international partnerships can play in the development of essential infrastructure for the well-being of populations.
