Professor Bismark Tyobeka honored by the French National Order of Merit

Professor Bismark Tyobeka, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of North-West University (NWU), recently received the prestigious distinction of the National Order of Merit from the President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron. This emotion-rich ceremony was officiated by His Excellency the French Ambassador to South Africa, David Martinon, on Friday May 24.

The event was held in the picturesque setting of Merton Keep in Pretoria, the official residence of the French Ambassador to South Africa. The National Order of Merit was created in 1963 to reward distinguished merit.

During the ceremony, Professor Tyobeka expressed his gratitude saying: “I stand before you with a mixture of respect and gratitude, receiving this National Order of Merit from the President of France. I am grateful to the President and the French people for this honor, this prestigious distinction is of great importance, not only to me, but also to my family and the North-West University community.”

He warmly thanked the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, Ambassador Martinon, as well as the staff and partners of the French Embassy in South Africa for making this great award possible. Professor Tyobeka highlighted the importance of this distinction for the strong relations between South Africa and France, as well as the fruitful collaboration between the two countries.

Professor Tyobeka also expressed his gratitude to the South African government for encouraging a strong bilateral partnership with France. He stressed that this relationship allows for effective collaborations in various areas, thus contributing to the well-being of people and the planet.

Ambassador Martinon, before presenting the National Order of Merit to Professor Tyobeka, praised his numerous achievements in the field of nuclear energy, his academic commitment and his leadership qualities. He concluded by conferring on Professor Tyobeka the title of Knight of the National Order of Merit, highlighting his long collaboration with French institutions and his gratitude to France.
