Press freedom in danger: defending Congolese journalists

In today’s world, press freedom remains an essential issue for democracy and the protection of fundamental rights. Every year, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) reminds us to what extent this freedom is weakened in many countries around the world.

RSF’s annual report for 2024 highlights countries where journalists are particularly threatened. This year again, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has been singled out for the numerous acts of violence and censorship to which journalists have been victims in 2023. Despite some progress, notably the recent press law, media professionals media remain exposed to pressure, arbitrary arrests and constant threats.

The example of journalist Stanis Bujakera, sentenced to six months in prison for his reporting on a political opponent, perfectly illustrates the challenges faced by Congolese journalists. Censorship, intimidation and attempts to silence the free press constitute major obstacles to freedom of expression and democracy.

The Congolese authorities must take concrete measures to guarantee the safety and independence of journalists, and put an end to repressive practices that hinder the work of the media. Civil society, international organizations and engaged citizens have a crucial role to play in supporting journalists and defending press freedom.

Faced with these crucial issues, it is imperative that the international community maintains pressure on governments that violate the rights of journalists and hinder media freedom. On this World Press Freedom Day, let us remember that freedom of expression is an essential pillar of any democratic society, and that we must remain vigilant against attacks on this fundamental right.

Ultimately, protecting journalists and promoting press freedom cannot be taken lightly. It is the duty of all of us to defend these fundamental principles and to fight against all forms of censorship and repression against media professionals. The fight for a free and independent press is an everyday fight, and it is together that we can advance democracy and human rights in the world.
