Nigeria: Towards a peaceful resolution of community conflicts in the Delta

In a context marked by recurring community conflicts in the Delta region of Nigeria, the need for a lasting and peaceful resolution of disputes between communities is becoming increasingly pressing. The recent violence in Okuama, Ughelli South Local Government Area, tragically culminated in the ambush and death of 17 members of the armed forces on March 14.

The coordinator of the local group, Chief Manager Seigha, expressed his deep concern over these clashes which persist and which require a permanent solution. He called on Delta elders to intervene to address these conflicts that hinder the peaceful coexistence of local communities. Seigha stressed the urgent need for effective mediation to avoid future disasters.

It is undeniable that government authorities have a crucial role to play in resolving these community crises. It is essential to put in place institutional mechanisms or government programs focused on promoting peace and security. Simply asking the parties involved to return home and find peace will not be enough to resolve these deep-rooted conflicts.

It is imperative that the government takes concrete steps to understand the underlying causes of conflicts and put in place appropriate reconciliation strategies. The creation of a truth and reconciliation committee could be a constructive initiative to facilitate dialogue and the peaceful resolution of differences. Additionally, transparently determining ownership of disputed land can help prevent future land disputes.

Furthermore, it is essential that Delta leaders collectively mobilize to resolve tensions between the Okuama and Okoloba communities. It is essential to recognize that these conflicts are not ethnic clashes, but rather local disputes that require a collaborative and inclusive approach to be resolved effectively.

Delta elders must play an active role in advocating for the interests of all youth in the region, regardless of ethnicity. They must firmly oppose any form of violence or crime, promoting values of peace, tolerance and peaceful coexistence.

In conclusion, it is imperative that local authorities and Delta elders join forces to end communal clashes and promote reconciliation and stability in the region. Peace and security are essential foundations for the development and well-being of all communities in the Delta, and it is everyone’s responsibility to contribute to building a peaceful and prosperous future for all.
