A recent survey conducted by Fatshimetrie has uncovered a concerning trend in Nigeria – a significant surge in the prices of disposable diapers. Testimonies from mothers in Abuja reveal their distress over the escalating costs of baby diapers, leading them to explore more budget-friendly options.
Mrs. Suzzy Yusuf, a civil servant and mother, expressed her disappointment with the diminishing quality of diapers coupled with the exorbitant prices. She shared her dismay at the necessity of sun-drying disposable diapers to meet the growing demand, underscoring the disheartening inflation in prices.
Reflecting on the striking price hike, Mrs. Yusuf lamented, “When I had my first child in 2021, a pack of the largest diaper size containing approximately 81 pieces cost between ₦4,800 to ₦5,000, depending on the brand. Now, the same pack is being sold for between ₦9,800 and ₦10,000, based on the brand and location of purchase. This situation is demoralizing as my income has not increased in tandem with these rising costs. It’s truly discouraging.”
Another mother, Mrs. Aisha Abubakar, decided to switch to non-disposable diapers for her son due to the escalating prices. Despite the discomfort these alternatives cause her child, she has chosen to persevere with them to mitigate expenses.
Furthermore, Ms. Ijeoma Aloysius resorted to using sanitary napkins as a substitute for diapers, albeit acknowledging the labor-intensive nature of this solution to sustain proper hygiene practices.
The escalating prices of disposable diapers are clearly placing Nigerian mothers in a financial bind, compelling them to seek cheaper alternatives despite their drawbacks. This reality underscores the necessity for families to carefully plan their expenditures and make informed decisions to ensure the well-being of their children.
Fatshimetrie remains committed to monitoring this situation closely and will provide ongoing updates to its readers regarding developments in the Nigerian diaper market.
