The case of actor Baba Ijesha, who was convicted of sexual assault on a minor and sentenced to sixteen years in prison, has sparked controversy and ongoing developments. Following his appeal against the trial court’s decision, the matter has progressed to the Court of Appeal of Nigeria.
On April 23, 2024, a three-judge panel led by Justice Folasade Ojo at the Court of Appeal heard Baba Ijesha’s appeal and decided to reserve the judgment for a later date. Baba Ijesha’s lawyer, Kayode Olabiran, argued in favor of his client, claiming that the prosecution failed to establish the age of the alleged victim and suggested that the actor was set up.
Olabiran asserted, “The accusation revolves around the rape of a minor, yet the prosecution could not confirm the victim’s age. The accused was framed. He was asked to participate in a scenario by his colleague, Damilola Adekoya (PW1), to act in a role without his knowledge of being filmed surreptitiously.”
He went on to state, “The events in the alleged video were orchestrated by the producer, and the simulated scene footage was presented by the prosecution. Even his confession on the day of apprehension was made under duress; he was coerced and assaulted until he admitted to the allegations.”
Baba Ijesha was arrested on April 22, 2021, after being accused of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl under the care of Nollywood actress Princess. Forensic specialist Ajayi-Kayode revealed that the medical report indicated that Baba Ijesha had allegedly engaged in sexual misconduct with the child since she was seven years old, including an appalling incident involving his car key.
The Baba Ijesha case has divided public opinion and underscored the challenges in safeguarding minors against sexual abuse. The impending decision by the Court of Appeal will be pivotal in determining the outcome of this contentious case and shaping the course of justice.
