British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has secured parliamentary approval for his latest initiative to transfer migrants to Rwanda after facing months of legislative delays. The bill was finally passed in the early hours of Tuesday morning, following Sunak’s commitment to commence deportation flights from July.
The protracted deadlock in Parliament, primarily caused by the unelected House of Lords, was broken after midnight when it conceded to the authority of the elected House of Commons and abandoned its last proposed amendments, clearing the path for the bill’s enactment.
Earlier in the day, Sunak held a rare morning press conference urging the Lords to cease obstructing his key proposal to curb the inflow of migrants crossing the English Channel in small boats. He assured that both houses of Parliament would remain in session until the bill was approved.
The legislative impasse is the latest hurdle in the implementation of a plan that has faced resistance from a series of court rulings and opposition from human rights activists who argue that it is both unlawful and inhumane.
Despite the opposition, the government remains determined to execute its strategy of deporting some migrants who enter the UK illegally to Rwanda as a deterrent against risking their lives on rubber boats with hopes of claiming asylum upon reaching Britain.
This initiative seeks to address the ongoing migration crisis and fortify border control. While legal disputes and controversies continue to surround the plan, the government stands firm in its commitment to see it through.
