The fight against Fatshimetry in Kinshasa: repression and re-education for a better society

Fatshimetrie, a term that has gained significant attention in recent Congolese news, particularly in Kinshasa, revolves around a social phenomenon involving young delinquents known as “kulunas.” These individuals have caused fear and chaos on the streets of Kinshasa, prompting the provincial inspection of the Congolese national police to take decisive action. Approximately three hundred and fifty kulunas were handed over to the National Service in an effort to combat this issue.

The transfer of these young delinquents to the National Service’s supervision and training center in Kanyama Kasese, Haut-Lomami province, highlights the government’s commitment to tackling crime and providing rehabilitation opportunities for these troubled youth. Additionally, efforts are being made to re-educate former offenders who have undergone training at the center, with the first group of one thousand six hundred individuals returning to Kinshasa after two years of support.

Governor Gentiny Ngobila of Kinshasa commended the law enforcement’s efforts in addressing this problem and emphasized the importance of collaboration between the police and the community to ensure public safety. The government’s approach combines measures of repression and re-education to offer a chance for young delinquents to reintegrate into society positively.

The actions taken against the kulunas in Kinshasa illustrate the authorities’ determination to combat urban delinquency and provide a brighter future for disadvantaged youth. By implementing a comprehensive strategy that includes re-education and enforcement, the government aims to create a safer environment and promote the social integration of all citizens, including those who have engaged in criminal activities.
