Return to calm in Turunga: towards fragile stability

Calm is gradually returning to Turunga, a village located on the outskirts of the city of Goma, in North Kivu, following a period of unrest sparked by the tragic death of a young man at the hands of two alleged FARDC soldiers. Despite the historical peacefulness of Turunga, local youth expressed their anger through demonstrations, blocking the streets with barricades to protest against the violence attributed to the Congolese armed forces.

Authorities intervened to ease tensions, removing barricades and allowing for the resumption of commercial activities. In contrast, in Goma, where a call to protest against rising crime was issued, activities proceeded without incident despite the ban on demonstrations by the city’s mayor, who feared further violence.

The recent wave of violence in both Goma and Turunga underscores the urgent need for authorities to address citizen security concerns. The tranquility in Turunga, though currently fragile, hinges on the authorities’ ability to meet the population’s expectations and create a secure environment conducive to regional development.
