**Fatshimetry**: The fight against violence against women, a societal emergency
The recent tragic death of Alisa Khadidja, a young Malagasy woman, due to domestic violence has once again brought to light a distressing reality that cannot be ignored: violence against women. This unfortunate incident sheds light on the urgent need for society to address the issue of domestic violence and ensure the safety and rights of women in vulnerable situations.
In response to this crisis, the network of women leaders for access to speech (RFLAP) and women’s rights organizations have called for strong action from the authorities to ensure that justice is served and those responsible for such heinous acts are held accountable for their crimes. However, beyond punitive measures, it is crucial to focus on prevention to eradicate this intolerable violence.
It is essential for the Congolese government, in collaboration with civil society, to intensify awareness and educational campaigns aimed at empowering women about their rights. This includes not only informing them about available legal remedies in cases of violence but also helping them identify warning signs and take action to stop the abuse before it escalates.
Breaking the silence and stigma surrounding domestic violence is imperative to encourage victims to speak out, seek help, and confide in others. Changing societal mindsets is necessary for everyone to recognize the magnitude of this issue and work together to combat it effectively.
Gender equality and the promotion of women’s rights must be central concerns for society. It is time to create a world where every woman can live freely, without the fear of violence or harm.
In memory of Alisa Khadidja and all victims of domestic violence, let us unite in our commitment to a future where equality and respect for all individuals are the cornerstone of a just and fair society.
