In recent news in Nigeria, a content creator was detained in a police cell for alleged cyberstalking. However, the details of his arrest have not yet been made official by the police.
Activist Omoyele Sowore expressed displeasure over the arrest, pointing out that the police were hiding behind the Cybercrime Act. He mentioned the case of another social media influencer, Chizorom Ofoegbu, who was also arrested, which he compared to that of the Very Dark Man.
According to Sowore, the police abuse their power and collaborate with influential people in the country to oppress individuals.
“Tonight I learned that the @Policeng despicably arrested Martins Vincent OTSE, aka @thatverydarkman, cowardly hiding behind the Cybercrime Act, because he said things that disturbed some senior police officers Similarly, another social media influencer, Chizorom Ofoegbu alias @IjeleSpeaks2, was arrested by the police and sent to prison in Keffi, following some questionable and inappropriate behavior in Abuja Apparently, the @. policeng collaborated with a pastor by violating his fundamental rights, thereby compromising his freedom.
“The @PoliceNG continues to abuse its powers to suppress freedom of expression in collusion with pastors, religious leaders, artists, politicians and highly connected individuals. I condemn this arbitrary, reckless, inhumane, unjust and illegal, and I call on @policeng authorities to release @thatverydarkman and @IjeleSpeaks2 immediately.
“The @PoliceNG must remember that this is how they contributed to the #EndSARS movement, a mass action that nearly engulfed the Nigeria Police Force. No one has the right to suppress freedom of expression under pretext of illegality,” Sowore wrote on his account.
The former presidential candidate urged the police to immediately release the Very Dark Man, Ofoegbu, and others detained under the Cybercrimes Act.
