“Successful green clean-up operation: over 1,623 tonnes of water lettuce removed from the Vaal River”

AfriForum recently led an ambitious clean-up operation in partnership with several organisations, businesses and community members to remove more than 1,623 tonnes of water lettuce from the Vaal River. This initiative, which took place at the beginning of February, helped restore the health and purity of the region’s aquatic ecosystem.

Water lettuces, also known as “Water lettuce”, are invasive plants that proliferate quickly and can cause significant damage to local flora and fauna. Indeed, these plants can obstruct waterways, reduce the amount of oxygen available in the water and disrupt the natural balance of the ecosystem.

Water experts have also warned against the use of glyphosate, a herbicide commonly used to control invasive plants. Indeed, the use of glyphosate is in violation of the National Water Act and poses risks to human health as well as aquatic life.

The removal of water lettuce from the Vaal River is an important step towards protecting the environment and preserving biodiversity. It highlights the importance of collaboration between different actors in society to preserve our natural resources and guarantee a sustainable future for future generations.
