“Humanitarian crisis in the DRC: the urgent call for international solidarity”

In a recent briefing, Bruno Lemarquis, MONUSCO Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in the Democratic Republic of Congo, highlighted the dramatic deterioration of the humanitarian situation in the country. According to him, the crisis in the DRC is one of the most serious and complex in the world, combining armed conflicts, massive population displacements and natural disasters.

Clashes between the M23 rebel group and the Congolese armed forces have reached an alarming level, exacerbating the already present instability in the North Kivu province. The humanitarian consequences of this violence are disastrous, with massive displacements of vulnerable populations in search of safety.

At the same time, the devastating floods currently affecting the country have affected more than two million people across several Congolese provinces. This emergency situation aggravates an already worrying crisis, endangering the lives of thousands of people.

In addition, Bruno Lemarquis highlighted the alarming scale of gender-based violence and sexual violence in the DRC. The number of cases reported in 2023 is significant, but likely represents only a fraction of the reality, suggesting that many cases remain hidden and unreported.

Faced with this critical situation, Lemarquis calls for urgent global mobilization to respond to the pressing humanitarian needs of affected populations. He underlines the importance of not turning our attention away from the crisis in the DRC, which risks being overshadowed by other international events.

It is crucial that the international community acts in a coordinated and rapid manner to address this major humanitarian crisis. Solidarity and support are essential to alleviate the suffering of the most vulnerable in the DRC and to work together to build a more stable and peaceful future for this country ravaged by conflicts and disasters.
