The fourth edition of the Global Leaders Forum “Reuters NEXT 2023” opened in New York, and saw the participation of the Deputy Prime Minister of the Economy of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Vital Kamerhe. Invited as spokesperson for the DRC, he joined the discussions alongside the world decision-makers present.
In his speech, Vital Kamerhe highlighted the significant progress made by the DRC, particularly in the current electoral process, the security situation in the east of the country, relations with neighboring countries, the withdrawal of MONUSCO, as well as as the revision of Chinese contracts. He highlighted the positive impacts already perceptible after the review of certain contracts with mining companies, such as Tenke Fungurume Mining and Sicomines, which made it possible to strengthen the role of the subcontracting regulatory authority and create jobs. .
The minister also spoke of the great achievements of the electoral body with a view to guaranteeing credible and transparent elections next December, emphasizing the inclusiveness of the process which allows several opponents to present themselves and carry out their campaign in compliance with the law.
Regarding diplomatic relations with neighboring countries and the security situation in the East, Vital Kamerhe underlined the commitment of President Félix Tshisekedi to recover harmony and cohesion with neighboring countries to promote the development of the region. . He also clarified that the withdrawal of MONUSCO was not an expulsion, but a process agreed between the two parties, stressing that the mission had shown its limits after twenty-five years of existence.
The “Reuters NEXT 2023” Global Leaders Forum brings together government figures, senior United Nations executives, representatives of NGOs, civil society, the media and international financial institutions. It will address six main themes to address the planet’s critical challenges.
