The importance of state medical aid for public health
State medical aid (AME) is an essential system for public health and the well-being of the most vulnerable populations. Its existence allows foreigners in an irregular situation to benefit from access to care, thus guaranteeing their medical care. However, this measure is regularly called into question, sparking heated debates.
The abolition of the AME, voted by the Senate as part of the immigration bill, raises serious concerns. Health professionals and migrant aid associations denounce the disastrous health consequences of this decision. Indeed, limiting access to care for vulnerable populations risks causing a deterioration in their state of health, but also compromising the overall health of the entire population.
It is important to emphasize that the AME only represents a tiny part of the Social Security budget, around 0.5%. In addition, this system is subject to strict conditions; only foreigners who have resided in France for at least three months and have limited resources are eligible. Therefore, removing the AME would not provide significant savings, but rather would have a detrimental effect on public health.
Indeed, by depriving foreigners in an irregular situation of access to care, we risk seeing alarming health situations appear. Undiagnosed or untreated illnesses could spread rapidly, endangering not only the health of those affected, but that of society as a whole.
Furthermore, irregular migrants also play a vital role in our society. They often occupy positions in key sectors such as delivery, catering or agriculture. If we do not provide them with the necessary medical care, we risk exposing the population to contagious diseases transmitted by these workers.
Removing the AME would therefore not only make no sense from a humanitarian point of view, but also make no sense from a public health point of view. Treating illnesses quickly helps limit their spread and reduce long-term treatment costs.
It is essential to take into account all public health issues and recognize the importance of AME to ensure adequate medical care and prevent health risks. It is necessary to find inclusive and supportive solutions to guarantee access to care for all, regardless of their administrative status. This will help safeguard the health and well-being of the entire population.
