The prelate stressed the importance to promote a climate of tranquility and unity during this crucial period for the future of the region.

In his speech, Bishop Abeli strongly condemned any speech inciting hatred, provocation and tribal-ethnic division. He called on candidates and their supporters to reject all forms of violence and to promote peace, social cohesion and unity. According to him, this is the only way to prevent the province of Maniema from falling into a cycle of violence and unnecessary conflicts.

He also warned against manipulation and political exploitation which can lead to acts of violence and hate speech. Archbishop Abeli underlined the responsibility of everyone in preserving peace and urged participants in a capacity-building workshop on the approach to peace and conflict prevention during electoral periods to contribute to the calming of the electoral climate throughout the province of Maniema.

This call for peace and non-violence is of crucial importance in a context where political tensions can easily degenerate into violence. Elections are sensitive times when political issues are heightened and different factions may be tempted to use force to achieve their objectives. Archbishop Abeli’s call is an essential reminder of the need to prioritize dialogue, tolerance and peaceful coexistence to guarantee a calm and democratic electoral process.

This call comes as part of a workshop organized by the Justice and Peace office of Caritas Development in Kindu, which aims to promote social cohesion and create a peaceful climate during the electoral and post-electoral period. The involvement of local actors in this type of initiative is essential to strengthen conflict prevention mechanisms and promote the culture of peace.

In conclusion, Bishop Abeli Muhoya’s call for peace and non-violence in the province of Maniema is a necessary reminder of the importance of preserving social cohesion and unity during the electoral deadlines. By fostering a climate of peace and dialogue, it is possible to prevent violence and unnecessary conflicts, and to build a better future for the region. It is a collective responsibility that must be taken to heart by all political actors and the population in general.
