The citizen movement “Po na Congo” recently organized a sit-in in front of Kikwit city hall to protest the growing insecurity in the city. According to members of this movement, cases of assassinations have become commonplace in Kikwit, reaching a worrying level.
More recently, a student was shot dead at La Carrière by individuals armed with machetes, just after his graduation ceremony. This murder sparked outrage and anger among citizens. Protesters held posters demanding justice for the victim and calling for peace and security.
The objective of this mobilization was to raise awareness among municipal authorities of the alarming situation of insecurity and to demand in-depth investigations to identify and arrest those responsible for these acts of violence.
Protesters expressed concern about the approach of the elections and the impact that insecurity could have on the electoral campaign. They point out that without security it will be difficult for candidates to carry out their campaign activities in the city.
Unfortunately, the protesters were unable to meet the mayor of Kikwit because he was away from his office. However, they remain determined to make their voices heard and will continue to mobilize the population to fight against insecurity and demand concrete measures to guarantee the security of citizens.
It is essential that authorities take these concerns seriously and commit to implementing effective strategies to combat crime in Kikwit. The safety of citizens must be an absolute priority in order to allow the city to develop and prosper with complete peace of mind.
