Title: Cameroon in shock: an unprecedented terrorist attack in Mamfe

Introduction:

On Monday, November 6, the town of Mamfe, located in the English-speaking southwest region of Cameroon, was the scene of a terrorist attack of unprecedented violence. An unidentified armed group targeted the Egbekaw neighborhood, plunging the population into terror and leaving behind a tragic toll. This heinous event once again highlights the Anglophone crisis that has shaken the country since 2016 and raises many questions about the security of civilians in this region.

A rude awakening:

At around 4:00 a.m., residents of Mamfe were startled awake by an arson attack which quickly spread to many houses. Those who tried to flee were shot down in cold blood by gunmen, leaving behind a scene of chaos and desolation. Municipal and prefectural authorities confirmed the death of 24 civilians, men, women and even children, in this attack described as “terrorist” by the Cameroonian authorities. However, some NGOs denounce a much heavier toll.

Bloody reprisals:

This bloody attack would, according to the authorities, be a response to suspicions of cooperation between local civilian populations and government armed forces. Since the start of the Anglophone crisis, Mamfe has been the target of separatists several times, with acts of violence perpetrated against institutions such as the town’s hospital. This latest episode of terror reinforces the feeling of insecurity that reigns in the region, endangering the daily lives of residents.

The revolt of a bereaved mayor:

Mamfe Mayor Robertson Tabenchong Ashu expressed his deep sadness and anger at the barbaric attack. He deplores the fact that despite numerous attempts at dialogue and calls to abandon arms, the situation continues to deteriorate. Ashu urges the authorities to take stronger measures to end this spiral of violence which affects so many innocent lives. In the meantime, the municipality is organizing itself to help the injured and to support bereaved families in their mourning.

Conclusion :

The Mamfe terrorist attack has plunged Cameroon into fear and once again raises the question of the security of civilian populations in areas affected by the Anglophone crisis. It is essential that national authorities take concrete measures to stem this incessant violence and provide justice to the victims. The people of Mamfe and the entire country deserve to live in peace and security, and it is our duty to support these efforts by strongly condemning these terrorist acts.
