Cholera in the DRC: emergency situation in Isangi, let’s mobilize to stop the spread of the disease!

Cholera continues to rage in the Isangi health zone, located 125 km from Kisangani in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Since last February, more than 40 suspected cases have been recorded, with the Liloko health zone being the most affected.

According to Dr. Charles Koimoke Saile, chief medical officer of the health zone, this resurgence of the disease is due to the consumption of unsafe water and the lack of hygiene in the region. Adequate patient care is essential to prevent cholera-related deaths.

Faced with this situation, the head doctor of the health zone calls on the competent authorities and partners to intervene urgently. In particular, he requests support in the “WASH” component (water, sanitation and hygiene) in order to make drinking water available to the community and to strengthen community-based surveillance.

This cholera epidemic highlights the importance of access to drinking water and adequate sanitary conditions. It is essential to raise awareness among the population of the importance of hygiene and to put in place preventive measures to stop the spread of the disease.

It is essential that the government, both provincially and nationally, and partners work together to effectively respond to this emergency and ensure the health and well-being of affected communities.

In conclusion, the recent increase in cholera cases in the Isangi health zone highlights the urgency of action to guarantee access to drinking water and adequate sanitary conditions. The mobilization of authorities and partners is essential to prevent the spread of the disease and ensure patient care. It is imperative to put in place prevention and awareness measures to protect the health of communities affected by this cholera epidemic.
