“Ivory Coast: The challenges of rice self-sufficiency”

Title: Ivory Coast faces the challenges of rice self-sufficiency

Introduction :
Côte d’Ivoire is a country that has a high consumption of rice, but struggles to produce enough to meet national demand. With an annual production of only 1.2 million tonnes of milled rice, against an estimated need of 2 million tonnes, the country depends largely on imports to fill this deficit. However, public and private actors in the sector are working to achieve self-sufficiency in rice in the coming years, despite the many obstacles that stand in their way.

1. The growing consumption of rice in Ivory Coast
Annual rice consumption in Côte d’Ivoire amounts to approximately 1.9 million tonnes, or an average of 84 kg per capita per year. Ivorians particularly appreciate local rice for its quality and authenticity. However, domestic production fails to meet this growing demand, leading to dependence on imports.

2. The need to modernize production
To increase rice production and achieve self-sufficiency, it is essential to modernize production techniques. A strategy inspired by the Indian model, which went from an importing country to a rice exporting country thanks to mechanization, is recommended. By encouraging young people to create agricultural SMEs and training and equipping them, the country can increase the percentage of mechanization in its rice sector. Currently at 15%, this objective aims to improve the efficiency and productivity of rice production in Côte d’Ivoire.

3. Environmental and health challenges
In addition to modernizing production, the Ivorian rice sector must also face environmental and health challenges. Land degradation due to the destruction of forest cover and the effects of climate change make soil regeneration crucial to maintaining sustainable yields. In addition, the appearance of new diseases linked to climate change, such as yellow variegation, requires the research and development of resistant varieties.

Conclusion :
Côte d’Ivoire faces significant challenges in achieving rice self-sufficiency. While domestic consumption continues to increase, production remains insufficient to meet demand. However, through initiatives to modernize production, regenerate soils and combat diseases, the country hopes to increase its rice production and reduce its dependence on imports. The ultimate objective is to be able to supply not only the national market, but also neighboring countries. This will require sustained efforts from public and private stakeholders in the rice sector in Côte d’Ivoire.
