DRC: Martin Fayulu demands a change in the electoral roll before the candidacies

The political situation in the DRC continues to attract attention with the various actions of opposition leaders. This Monday, June 19, Martin Fayulu, political opponent of the Lamuka platform, set his condition for submitting applications. According to him, no candidate from this platform will submit his candidacy if the electoral roll is not changed. He therefore calls for popular resistance against this corrupt electoral file. Fayulu specifies however that it is not a question of a boycott of the phase of deposit of the candidatures, but rather of an initiative for the change of the electoral list.

This decision could have a significant impact on the upcoming elections, with the Lamuka platform which brings together several opposition leaders. In fact, during the last presidential elections, this coalition gathered more than 6 million votes, which represents around 20% of the votes cast.

It is therefore essential for President Felix Tshisekedi to pay attention to this request, in order to avoid any challenge from the opposition during the elections. Without a credible electoral register, the risk of a post-electoral crisis is always present in the DRC.

The fight against corruption in the electoral register is all the more important as the legislative elections are fast approaching next December. The National Union of Congolese (UNC) has already set the very ambitious goal of winning 150 seats in the National Assembly, thanks in particular to the mobilization of its militant youth. These are therefore major electoral issues that are looming for the DRC.

However, the security situation remains worrying, especially in conflict areas such as Beni. The government recently announced measures to combat the urban crime plaguing this city, but the safety of citizens is still at risk.

In addition, the terrorist attack in Uganda with at least 42 deaths in a school reminds us that terrorism is a threat to which the DRC is not immune. It is therefore essential that the authorities strengthen security throughout the territory.

Finally, the return of Joseph Kabila to the political scene may also have an impact on the unstable situation in the DRC. The last presidential elections saw the victory of Felix Tshisekedi, but with a coalition which brought together the FCC, the party of the outgoing president. If Kabila decides to play a more active role in Congolese politics, it could upset the fragile balance of the ruling coalition.

In short, the news in the DRC is rich in events that can influence the political and socio-economic future of the country. Legislative elections, security, electoral corruption and the return of Joseph Kabila are elements to follow closely in the weeks and months to come.
