Improving kidney health in the DRC: Training in pediatric and adult nephrology to strengthen the skills of health professionals.

Training in pediatric and adult nephrology: strengthening the health of the Congolese population

Doctors, nurses and health engineers gathered in Kinshasa to participate in training on pediatric nephrology and adult nephrology. This initiative, set up by the Congolese Society of Nephrology, aims to strengthen the capacities of health professionals in order to improve the health of the Congolese population.

The Democratic Republic of Congo currently has 38 nephrologists, including 32 specialized in adult nephrology and 6 in pediatric nephrology. With this training, the Congolese Society of Nephrology hopes to encourage young doctors to take an interest in this discipline. Nephrology being a recent discipline in the DRC, it did not always attract young doctors before. However, with the advent of dialysis, nephrology is becoming an essential area for the management of kidney disease. By subsidizing these treatments, we can expect an increase in the number of patients benefiting from dialysis, which should arouse the interest of young doctors for this specialty.

In addition to theoretical courses on pediatric and adult nephrology, the training also includes practical workshops on dialysis and nursing care. These sessions will allow participants to develop their skills in the field of renal replacement therapy, peritoneal dialysis, and other interventions related to nephrology.

This training initiative is also part of a desire for internationalization of the University of Kinshasa, Alma Mater of the university clinics where this training takes place. The rector of the university stresses the importance of managing kidney disease in precarious conditions, as the DRC faces challenges in the management of kidney disease, in particular access to means of renal replacement therapy.

In conclusion, training in pediatric and adult nephrology in the DRC is an important initiative to strengthen the skills of health professionals and improve the management of kidney disease. By making young doctors aware of this discipline and by subsidizing treatments, we can hope for a significant improvement in the kidney health of the Congolese population
