“The occupation of the M23 and the Rwandan army in the DRC: LUCHA calls for concrete measures for a lasting solution”

The security situation in eastern DRC is extremely worrying. Since June 13, 2022, the border town of Bunagana and several other localities in Rutshuru territory in North Kivu have been occupied by M23 terrorists and their allies from the Rwandan army (RDF). The Congolese authorities do not seem able to regain control of these entities, despite the establishment of a state of siege for two years and the arrival of EAC forces to fight the terrorists.

Faced with this situation, the citizen movement “LUCHA” called on the Congolese and the partners of the DRC to show their solidarity and their support for the soldiers as well as for the victims of this aggression. In a statement relayed by POLITICO.CD, LUCHA believes that the DRC is being duped by the EAC, which claims to be fighting alongside the FARDC against the aggressors of the M23/RDF, while the majority of its member countries play an extremely important in destabilizing and plundering the natural resources of the eastern provinces for several years.

In order to put an end to this worrying situation, LUCHA recommends several possible solutions: the immediate lifting of the state of siege, the diplomatic break with Rwanda and Uganda, the end of the foreign military operations in progress in the DRC and the urgent establishment of the Disarmament, Demobilization, Community Reintegration and Stabilization Program (PDDRC-S).

The pro-democracy movement also urges Kinshasa to seize the United Nations to request the creation of a special criminal court for the DRC. This option could make it possible to bring those responsible for this worrying security situation to justice.

It is time for concrete steps to be taken to put an end to this chronic instability in eastern DRC, which has lasted too long. The Congolese and their partners must mobilize to support the soldiers and the civilian populations who are victims of this aggression.
