On June 12, an attack perpetrated by the militia of the Cooperative for the Development of Congo (CODECO) left around fifty dead and several injured in the Lala site for displaced people in Ituri. This tragedy sparked a wave of indignation across the world and various organisations, including the European Union and the USA, have strongly condemned these criminal acts.
For its part, Monusco has reinforced its security system in the area and called on the Congolese authorities to launch an investigation to bring to justice the culprits of this carnage. The Special Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations in the DRC and Head of the UN Mission in the DRC, Bintou Keita, also strongly condemned this attack. In particular, she reiterated her call for an immediate cessation of violence by all armed groups against civilians and she urged the CODECO militia to respect its commitments.
In short, this tragic event reminds us of the need to redouble our efforts to guarantee the safety of all Congolese and to eradicate the violence committed by armed groups in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
