“South Kivu: slowness in the execution of the development program jeopardizes 145 territories”

The development of 145 territories in South Kivu is in danger because of the slowness in the execution of the work of the development program. The coordination of civil society in South Kivu expressed concern about this in a report published on June 13 after a field visit to the territories. Work is not progressing, according to them, and inequalities between urban and rural areas persist, thus contributing to poverty. Misunderstandings between the local population and the UNDP concerning the relocation of certain structures to new sites are not uncommon. The local workers would have liked to be involved in the works, but this is not the case and the companies selected by the UNDP do not master the environment. Rehabilitation of agricultural feeder roads, an important aspect for the agricultural component, has not yet started and work is at a standstill in certain territories such as Kabare and Uvira. Civil society recommended strong involvement of local communities for better program visibility. UNDP/Sud-Kivu, for its part, hoped that, except with the approval of the Ministry of Planning, no changes would be made without its agreement.

In short, the development project is slowed down and the negative impact is felt on the local population of the province of South Kivu. Civil society coordination has made recommendations, but it is up to the various actors to find solutions for the well-being of the Congolese people.
